Party Bar Math

How many shots are in a 750 ml bottle?

About 17 shots. A 750 ml bottle (a "fifth") holds 25.4 oz, which is 16 full 1.5 oz shots with a little left over. A cocktail with 2 oz of spirit gets you 12 drinks per bottle.

Whole pours only. A US standard shot is 1.5 oz; 1.25 oz is a common bar pour, and 1 oz is a "pony".

Shots vs. drinks

A shot is one pour of spirit. A cocktail can hold 1.5 to 2.5 oz of spirit, so a bottle makes fewer cocktails than shots. A highball like a vodka soda uses 1.5 oz, while a Margarita or an Old Fashioned uses 2 oz. Count your cocktails by their recipe, not by shots. The batch cocktail calculator does this for you.

For a party

  • A 1.75 L handle is the cheapest way to buy a spirit you'll pour a lot of, and it makes about 39 drinks at 1.5 oz.
  • Plan about 1 liter of mixer for every 8 highballs.
  • Not sure how many bottles to buy? Use the party drinks calculator or the wedding bar calculator.
