How many bottles of champagne for a toast?

About 6 bottles for 50 guests and 12 bottles for 100 guests, at a 3 oz toast pour (8 toasts per 750 ml bottle). Pouring full 4 oz flutes, it's 8 and 16. Buy one extra bottle for foam and the head table's refill.

750 ml bottles, rounded up. A 750 ml bottle holds 25.4 oz. A 1.5 L magnum holds two bottles' worth.

How to work it out

Bottles = toasting guests × pour size ÷ 25.4 oz, rounded up. Only count guests who will actually take a glass. Kids, non-drinkers and anyone who skips it can toast with sparkling cider or an NA sparkling wine. That's usually 1 bottle for every 8 to 10 of them.

Bartender tips for the toast

  • A toast is a few sips. A 3 oz pour is plenty, and it saves a quarter of the bottles compared with full flutes.
  • Pour while the speeches start, not before. Flutes poured too early go flat and warm.
  • Cava, prosecco and crémant pour exactly like champagne and cost far less.
  • If sparkling is also on the bar all night, plan that separately as wine (5 glasses per bottle).
